Shweta’s journey with commUnity+: Empowering Lives, One Step at a Time

When I first arrived in Melbourne in 2010, I couldn’t have imagined the journey that lay ahead. Back then, I was a healthcare professional on a dependent visa, taking a pause to embrace the joys of motherhood with my toddler. Two years passed, and as my daughter started kindergarten, I realised it was time for me to re-enter the workforce. However, breaking into the Australian job market without local experience was no easy feat.

Encouraged by friends, I began volunteering, exploring different sectors, and gaining new experiences. In 2016, through a colleague’s recommendation, I connected with commUnity+. What started as volunteering in administration quickly evolved into a fulfilling career, allowing me to contribute meaningfully to the lives of others while continuing to grow both personally and professionally.

My Role: Behind the Scenes, Making a Difference

As a lead Administration Officer for the SEE and AMEP programs, my role goes beyond data entry and enrollment tasks. I guide and support our admin team, ensuring they have the resources and knowledge to navigate complex processes and uphold policies. Each day, I collaborate with my colleagues to address challenges, coordinate operations, and provide critical support that helps keep our programs running smoothly.

Moments That Defined My Journey

Over the years, my responsibilities have expanded significantly. I began working in the Northwest region, managing only the SEE program, but within two years, I transitioned to overseeing both SEE and AMEP programs at St Albans. These changes brought new challenges, but they also opened doors for growth.

Several moments stand out during my time here:

  • Transitioning to the new SEE contract and adapting to the Workforce Australia platform amidst system glitches.
  • The big move from Victoria Square to Brimbank Aquatic and Wellness Centre which required packing, archiving, and meticulous planning.
  • The unforgettable era of the COVID-19 pandemic, when we shifted to remote work, adapting our workflows to support students from home.
  • Each of these experiences not only tested our resilience but also strengthened our bond as a team.

Why This Work Matters

Coming from a non-English speaking background, I deeply understand the challenges that immigrants face in adapting to a new country. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that my work contributes to helping others overcome these barriers. The impact of our programs on clients’ lives is profound; we provide them with the skills and confidence to navigate a predominantly English-speaking world.

Reflections and Hopes for the Future

Seven years into my role, I’m as motivated as ever. The trust my senior management places in me, coupled with the new projects and challenges, keeps me engaged. I’m proud to be part of an organization that values diversity and offers unwavering support.

Looking ahead, I hope to see commUnity+ grow into the leading service provider in the western suburbs and expand its reach further. Personally, I aspire to continue growing professionally, embracing new challenges, and contributing even more to this incredible organisation.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my Boston Terrier and chauffeuring my teenager to her extracurricular activities. These moments remind me of the importance of balance and the joys of life beyond the workplace.

To anyone considering a role in this field, my advice is simple: It’s rewarding yet challenging but remember—you’re surrounded by great people who are always ready to help.
